Lecture: "Music at Work in Brazil"

Fri, April 25, 2014 • 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM • DFA 4.104

LLILAS visiting post-doctoral researcher Ana Raquel Motta presents "Music at Work in Brazil," an interdisciplinary study on the relationship between work and music, viewed through the lens of linguistics, labor studies and ethnomusicology. Motta discusses her research on nine Brazilian communities that sing while they perform farming activities such as "Capina de Roça" (Hoeing the Field), "Petição de Chuva" (Rain Prayer), "Colheita do Arroz" (Rice Harvest), "Raspagem da Mandioca" (Manioc Scrape), "Fiação do Algodão" (Cotton Spinning), "Quebra do Coco" (Coconut Breaking) and "Destalagem do Fumo" (Tobacco Stripping).

Motta is a researcher at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP) and the recipient of a São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) scholarship. She is currently a visiting scholar at the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) at The University of Texas at Austin.
