The most recent debates on Latin American Art focus on conceptualism and on the set of strategiesthat enabled artistic expression in contexts of dictatorship, censorship and violence. Conceptualism and its inherent friction with institutions introduce a way of exploring allusive and ambiguous forms of expression that allow transmitting prohibited meanings in a veiled and poetic form. The conceptual practices – we will refer to them as practices instead of style, which will also constitute one of the problems to be analyzed – allowed the development of a confrontational art, one that is critical towards the artistic institutions as well as society and structures of power. The course will introduce some key moments in Latin American conceptualism in comparison with international conceptualism. It will include an analysis of the central authors for the study of avant-garde notions, institutional critique and structure of the artistic field (Raymond Williams, Peter Bürger, and Pierre Bourdieu). It will consider conceptualism as it took place in Latin America as well as in different moments of Chicano art. Some of the artists that we will take into account are: Victor Grippo, Roberto Jacoby, León Ferrari, Lea Lublin, Juan Carlos Romero, Edgardo Antonio Vigo or Liliana Porter; movements in Argentine conceptualism such as El Arte de los Medios o Tucuman Arde; Chilean artists such as Gonzalo-Diaz, Eugenio Dittborn, Diamela Eltit, Catalina Parra, and Lotty Rosenfeld; Brazilian artists such as Helio Oiticica, Lygia Clark or Cildo Meireles; Colombians such as Antonio Caro, Oscar Muñoz or Doris Salcedo; Uruguayans like Luis Camnitzer or Clemente Padín or the Chicano artists of the ASCO Group (Harry Gamboa, Gronk and Willie Herrón III) as well as Celia Alvarez Muñoz –30% of de seminar will be consecrated to the analysis of Chicano art. The seminar will be centered in theoretical and historical aspects as well as in the analysis of the different poetics.
