LLILAS Resources for UT Latin Americanist Faculty
LLILAS has resources available for conferences, lectures, visiting professorships, and faculty research. This document serves as a guideline to resources and the corresponding allocation process. Staff contact information is listed at the end. Specific information on most of the programs listed can be found here on the LLILAS Web site.
Conferences and Lectures
Title VI
Requests for lecture funding are submitted to the LLILAS Associate Director and decided upon on a first-come, first-served basis until all the available funds are disbursed. A description of the lecture and a note on other sources of funding should accompany the request. The conference/event should have substantial Latin American and/or Caribbean content and LLILAS-affiliated faculty should be involved in organizing the conference/event. Funding limits are $500 for lectures, while conference funding will vary. Requests should be sumbitted at least one month in advance and LLILAS cosponsorship must be acknowledged in official conference posters, programs, etc.
Lozano Long Conference and Annual Lectureship
This is the principal conference that LLILAS organizes each year, in accordance with priorities set by the LLILAS Faculty Team and the Executive Committee. Conference proposals should be submitted to the LLILAS Director for consideration by a subcommittee of the EC.
Harte Lectureship in Latin America and the Media
Recommendations may be submitted at any time to the LLILAS Director. Review of proposals is made by a committee that includes two members from the College of Communication and is chaired by the LLILAS Director.
Mexican Center
A call for proposals for the upcoming academic year is sent to the LLILAS-affiliated faculty list in January with an end-of-February deadline. Proposals and program priorities are reviewed by the Mexican Center Faculty Committee chaired by the Director of the Mexican Center.
Visiting Professorships (one semester)
Tinker Visiting Professor
This professorship supports visiting scholars to teach at UT for one semester. The candidate must be a citizen of Latin America, the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, Canada (must be a Latin Americanist), Spain, or Portugal. The call for nominations and the application are sent out to the LLILAS-affiliated faculty list on the first Friday of October, with a deadline of the first Friday of November for review by a faculty committee appointed by the Director.
Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Annual Visiting Professorship
This professorship supports visiting scholars from a Latin American country to teach at UT for one semester. Candidates must be nominated by UT academic departments. The call for nominations and application are sent out to the LLILAS-affiliated faculty list on the first Friday of October, with a deadline of the first Friday of November for review by a faculty committee appointed by the Director.
Instituto Rio Branco Visiting Chair in Brazilian Studies
Nominations are made by the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC) in accordance with an agreement between the Ministry and UT Austin. Logistics are coordinated by the Brazil Center.
Matías Romero Visiting Chair in Mexican Studies
Nominations are made by the Ministry of Foreign Relations of Mexico in accordance with an agreement between the Ministry and UT Austin. Logistics are coordinated by the Mexican Center.
Visiting Scholars
Visiting Resource Professors
VRPs are invited by UT Latin Americanist faculty members to lecture for one to two weeks in either undergraduate or graduate classes. Candidates must be nominated by UT academic departments. The call for nominations and application are sent out to the LLILAS-affiliated faculty list on the first Friday of October, with a deadline of the first Friday of November for review by a faculty committee appointed by the Director.
Visiting Scholars and Visiting Researchers
This program allows non-UT researchers to use library resources. Request for status can be made at any time by outside scholars/researchers, but should be submitted at least one month in advance of the applicant's proposed arrival date.
Faculty Resources
Title VI Faculty Travel Funds
Requests for funding are submitted to the LLILAS Associate Director and are decided upon on a first-come, first-served basis until the funds are exhausted. In order to receive an award, faculty must be LLILAS affiliates. Funding limits are $400 for domestic travel and $1,000 for foreign travel. Funds can be used for lodging, transportation (airfare, ground transportation, taxis), meals, or conference registration fees. Requests should be submitted at least one month in advance of the expected departure date and should include a description of the conference/event, its relation to Latin American Studies, and the faculty member's role in the activity.
LLILAS Faculty Leave (one semester)
The call for applications for the following academic year is sent out to the LLILAS-affiliated faculty list on the first Friday of October, with a deadline of the first Friday of November. Applications are reviewed by a faculty committee appointed by the Director.
Mellon Summer Research Awards
The call for applications for the summer following the current academic year is sent out to the LLILAS-affiliated faculty list on the first Friday of October, with a deadline of the first Friday of November. Applications are reviewed by a faculty committee appointed by the Director.
