Fellowships and Scholarships

University Preemptive Fellowship

These prestigious awards are offered by the Graduate School to attract top-quality graduate students to UT. Graduate advisers have the vital role of identifying and nominating eligible applicants.

Eligibility:

  • incoming graduate student
  • ranks in top 10 percent of national peer group as measured by GRE score and grade point average
  • nomination from graduate department

Stipend:
Awards may range from $3,000 to $30,000; awarded for fall and spring semesters.


University Continuing Fellowships

Available to students who are currently enrolled in a UT graduate program. Graduate advisers submit nominations to the Graduate School. Faculty review committees that evaluate the applications emphasize accomplishments since entering Graduate School.

Eligibility:

  • currently enrolled in a graduate program at UT
  • awards are based on major accomplishments since entering Graduate School
  • well-defined research project, strong personal statement, and letters of recommendation
  • financial need will be considered
  • nomination from graduate adviser

Stipend:
$18,000 for nine months, $1,119 supplementary to assist with medical insurance, plus up to $3,258 per long semester in tuition support.

Graduate School Fellowships

Available to students currently enrolled in a UT graduate program. Students nominated for the Continuing Fellowship will be considered for this award.

Eligibility:

  • currently enrolled in a graduate program at UT
  • awards are based on major accomplishments since entering Graduate School
  • well-defined research project, strong personal statement, and letters of recommendation
  • financial need will be considered
  • nomination from graduate adviser

Stipend:
$3,000 applied toward tuition and fees; this award entitles students to pay tuition and fees at in-state rates.

David Bruton, Jr., Graduate Fellowship

Established by the UT Systems Board of Regents for the benefit of UT-Austin in September 1991. Students nominated for the Continuing Fellowships will be considered for this award. Graduate advisers have the vital role of identifying and nominating eligible students.

Eligibility:
Students may be entering or continuing, and may be candidates for the master's or doctoral degree Two groups of students are eligible:

  1. Students who have been awarded nationally competitive graduate fellowships.
  2. Students nominated for Continuing Fellowships; awards are based on major accomplishments since entering Graduate School, a well-defined program of research, strong personal statement, and letters of recommendation.

Stipend: $1,000

Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Graduate Fellowship

To encourage the study of Latin America and to forge closer ties with Latin America.

Eligibility:
A recruitment fellowship for LLILAS graduate students. First preference will be given to applicants from the following counties in South Texas: Atascosa, Bee, Bexar, Brooks, Cameron, Dimminit, Duval, El Paso, Frio, Goliad, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Jim Wells, Karnes, Kenedy, Kinney, Kleberg, Lasalle, Live Oak, Maverick, mcMullen, Medina, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio, Starr, Uvalde, Val Verde, Victoria, Webb, Willac, Wilson, Zapata and Zavala.

Stipend:
$12,000 for nine months (Fall and Spring semesters) - plus U.T. tuition and fees.

Debra J. Herring Memorial Fellowship Fund

This fellowship was established by family members in memory of LLILAS graduate Debra J. Herring. Recipients in Latin American Studies programs requiring more than two years of coursework are eligible to apply for a second year of support. Available to a full-time second-year graduate student in good standing in the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies. The awardee should have the following additional attributes: proficiency in Portuguese and/or Spanish, very high grade point average, financial need, interest in promoting improvement in international relations and in the quality of life in Latin America, special interest in Brazil and demonstrated career interest in working directly with Latin American societies. Preference will be given among equally qualified applicants, to students with demonstrated life experience with African-American communities and cultures, and with interest in Brazilian cultures. Anna Mae Ford Memorial Fund

Established by family members to honor Ms. Ford's lifelong commitment to Latin American culture, language, and history and to educational opportunity. Applications are available online.

Eligibility:
LLILAS M.A. students entering their third or fourth semester of study.

Stipend:
$1,200 to be disbursed over two semesters, plus out-of-state tuition waiver

Evan Frankel Graduate Fellowship

Eligibility:
A recruitment fellowship for an Institute of Latin American Studies student whose area of research and interests are in the humanities.

The Mellon Fellowship in Sociology

The Mellon Fellowships in Latin American Sociology is a program administered through the sociology departments at three U.S. universities: the University of Texas at Austin, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, Los Angeles. This program provides fellowships to Ph.D. students in Sociology specializing in Latin America. While the individual programs at each university are different, the overall goal is to provide support for promising graduate students committed to a career in teaching and research in Latin American sociology.

Professional Development Travel Award

Available to current LLILAS students who are presenting a paper at a conference. You must attach proof that your paper has been accepted as well as an abstract of the paper that you will present.

Teresa Lozano Long Graduate Travel Grant

These grants are for study abroad in Latin America at a degree-granting institution. Students must return having completed at least 9 hours of coursework that can be applied toward their program of work.
