Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies offers a limited number of Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) for study of Portuguese or an arranged Amerindian language. These highly competitive graduate fellowships are funded by the Department of Education and are available for both summer and academic year studies. 

Awards will not be made to native speakers of the language or to those who possess fluency equivalent to educated native speakers in the language for which the award is sought.

Eligibility:

  • U.S. citizen/permanent resident
  • Shows potential for superior academic achievement as indicated by a long-term interest in Latin America
  • A graduate student in good standing at UT Austin, or has been accepted for regular admission to the Graduate School at UT Austin

  • Entering graduate students submit application and statement of purpose 
  • Current graduate students submit application with all other required materials


Academic Year FLAS

Graduate students from all fields of study who are in good standing at UT Austin or who have been recently accepted for admission to the Graduate School at UT Austin are eligible to apply.  During the fellowship period, academic year FLAS recipients must be enrolled in at least three hours of language courses on a letter-grade basis during each long semester, as well as a Latin American area study course on a letter-grade basis during each long semester. Students must be registered at least full-time (9) hours. Fellowships typically provide a stipend of $15,000 for the academic year (fall and spring), plus tuition and fees (up to a maximum 14 hours of credit).

Summer FLAS—For Portuguese language study at UT Austin or other approved Amerindian language study

Graduate students from all fields of study, who are in good standing at UT Austin, are eligible to apply. Beginning language students usually attend a domestic program, while intermediate and advanced students attend an overseas program. All program information must be included in the application materials. Fellowships typically provide a stipend of $2,500 summer (one summer session) plus UT Austin tuition and fees (for language course, up to $5,000). Summer courses are expected to have the same number of course hours as two-semester courses: a minimum of six weeks and 140 hours for introductory and intermediate courses; 120 hours for advanced courses.
