LLILAS Grads Receive Outstanding Thesis and Report Awards

Two recent graduates of the LLILAS master's program received awards for outstanding writing, one for a thesis and one for a report. The recipients were Josephine Leona Engels, Class of 2008, and Esha R. Clearfield, Class of 2007.

Supervising professors were asked to submit nominations for theses and reports during 2007–2008 that showed excellence in scholarship, research, and writing. The winners were chosen by a faculty committee, and each received a $300 award.

Josephine Engels, who was supervised by Prof. Jonathan Brown, was awarded for her thesis "Sectoral Clashes and Forgotten Classes: Rural Workers and the Peronist State 1946–1948." The LLILAS graduate, who hails from Parishville, New York, also was recipient of a UT Academic Competitive Fellowship and a Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Travel Scholarship during her time in the program.

Esha Clearfield was supervised by Prof. Peter Ward in her award-winning report, “Three Generations of Remittances: An Examination of the Policy Implications of and Responses to the Evolution of Mexican Emigration and Remittance Patterns." The Austin native received joint M.A. degrees from LLILAS and the LBJ School of Public Affairs.
