Government PhD Candidate Wins Prestigious Granof Award

Roy Germano, a doctoral candidate in the UT Department of Government, has received the $10,000 Michael H. Granof Outstanding Graduate Student Award at the Graduate School/University Co-op Awards for Excellence in Graduate Education, which recognize distinguished scholarship, research, writing, and teaching.
Germano’s dissertation, "The Political Economy of Remittances,” argues that Mexican migrants' remittances have been a significant and ignored factor in preventing populist backlash to market-oriented reforms in Mexico. He produced, shot, and edited “The Other Side of Immigration,” an award-winning film in which he interviewed residents of Mexican towns where almost half the population had left to work in the United States.
