Book Traces History of Soccer in Brazil and Argentina

In a new book from UT Press, "Temples of the Earthbound Gods," Christopher Gaffney (Department of Geography and the Environment) examines the long-term fascination with soccer and its relation to national identity, focusing on Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires.
Gaffney, who has played soccer on four continents and won the 1997 Taiwanese Footballer of the Year Award, traces the history of the game in Brazil and Argentina. In spanning both ancient and contemporary worlds, he shows how the development of stadiums led to urbanization and nation building in two of Latin America's most fascinating cities.
