Two Students Receive Newly Created Brazil Center Scholarship
Posted: May 14, 2013
LLILAS is pleased to announce the first-ever recipients of the Brazil Center Scholarship for Graduate Students. Congratulations to Justin Laue (Department of Geography and the Environment) and Eyal Weinberg (Department of History).
The Brazil Center Scholarship seeks to promote the visibility of Brazilian Studies on the UT campus and the work of UT graduate students in Brazil by providing funds to help facilitate research in Brazil. Both of this year’s recipients will use the funds to further their research goals in Brazil this summer.
Justin Laue is conducting research that will contribute to his master’s thesis on the development of once-protected lands in the Brazilian Amazon. He will be traveling to Brasília, Belém, and Itaituba to conduct interviews, search the archives, and collect Global Positioning System (GIS) data on the rate at which protected lands are shrinking.
Eyal Weinberg will be conducting archival work in Brasília and Rio de Janeiro that will help advance her dissertation research examining the role of medical doctors in the torture of citizens during Brazil’s military regime.
We look forward to hearing about the progress of their projects next semester.
