White House Honors Associate Professor Luis Urrieta as César E. Chávez “Champion of Change”

LLILAS faculty associate Luis Urrieta Jr. was recognized by the White House on Monday, March 31, 2014, as being one of 10 community leaders who embody the spirit of César E. Chávez’s legacy. Urrieta is associate professor and program director for the Cultural Studies in Education area of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. He is coordinator of the Cultura en Acción / Culture in Action after-school program. The son of Mexican immigrants from rural Michoacán, Urrieta has dedicated his life and career to Latino/a community and educational issues, emphasizing the value of immigrant language, culture, and community knowledge as well as the importance of high academic achievement. Urrieta is chair of the LLILAS Mexican Center and a faculty affiliate of the Center for Mexican American Studies.
