Posted: June 29, 2009
Néstor Osorio, Executive Director of the International Coffee Organization (ICO) in London, will be the first speaker in the new Faces of the Americas/Rostros de las Américas series on July 14, 2009, 6:00–7:30 P.M. at The Long Center for the Performing Arts, south of downtown Austin. Osorio will talk about sustainability and the global coffee trade.
The speaker series is an exciting new partnership between LLILAS, Univisión, and the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The focus is on conditions affecting business opportunities between the U.S. and Latin America and effective strategies for connecting with Hispanic audiences in the U.S. The partners will combine their expertise and reach to bring to Austin the most topical and lively voices from Latin America and the U.S. to discuss the latest in business and current events in the region.
A native of Colombia, Néstor Osorio has served since 2002 as Executive Director of the ICO, the United Nations agency that oversees the world coffee economy. A distinguished leader in trade affairs, Osorio has been an adviser on the coffee and sugar trades to the Colombian government and represented Colombia at the World Trade Organization from 1994 to 1999. After leaving the WTO, he assisted developing countries with trade negotiations as an international consultant to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization and the UN Conference on Trade and Development.
The talks will take place six times a year. Four talks will be held at The Long Center, while two will take place at another Austin venue. Each talk will be preceded by a reception and coffee tasting, with coffees from throughout Latin America, followed by a Q&A session with the audience. The events are free and open to the public.
