Posted: January 23, 2009
LLILAS will cohost a conference at Peking University to take place March 17–18, 2009. China and Latin America in the Global Age brings together faculty participants from the two universities as well as colleagues from El Colegio de México.
An initiative of Dr. Jonathan Brown, Associate Director of LLILAS, the event seeks to increase the visibility of LLILAS and UT Austin in China by accomplishing three objectives: (1) To bring the educational potential of the University of Texas at Austin to the attention of Chinese university administrators and higher education officials as China prepares new generations of students for the challenges of the twenty-first century; (2) to establish a cooperative relationship between the most prestigious university in China and the top U.S. program in Latin American Studies in order to promote mutually beneficial exchanges of teaching professors, researchers, and graduate and undergraduate students; and (3) to introduce the complete package of educational services and resources of the University of Texas at Austin to Chinese students and professors by demonstrating our academic strength in an area of increasing interest to Latin American Studies.
The UT delegation consists of Dr. Randy Diehl, Dean of Liberal Arts; Dr. Bryan Roberts, Director of LLILAS; Dr. Charles Groat, Interim Dean, Jackson School of Geosciences; Dr. Ning Lin, Director of LANIC, LLILAS; Dr. Madeline Hsu, Director of the Center for Asian American Studies; Dr. Seth Garfield, Associate Professor of History and LLILAS Undergraduate Adviser; and Dr. Néstor Rodríguez, Professor of Sociology.
