Despedida/Bienvenido to Undergraduate Faculty Advisers

Posted: August 31, 2006

Virginia Garrard-Burnett, longtime undergraduate faculty adviser at LLILAS, is leaving her position and will be replaced by Seth Garfield.

Dr. Garrard-Burnett has moved fulltime to the UT History Department following a promotion to associate professor. A Ph.D. of Tulane University, she began her tenure as the institute's first undergraduate adviser in 1990. Under her guidance, the undergraduate program made significant advances, including increases in enrollment and study abroad. For many years she has taught the introductory course Key Ideas and Issues in Latin America, a requirement for all incoming LAS undergrads. An expert on religious movements and ethic identity in Latin America, with a focus on Central America, she is the author of Living in the New Jerusalem: A History of Protestants in Guatemala (1998) and On Earth As It Is in Heaven: Religion in Latin America (2000), and coeditor with David Stoll of Rethinking Protestantism in Latin America (1993). Ginny will be missed by her colleagues at LLILAS, but we hope her new position means that she will be teaching classes here for many years to come.

A bright note is that her replacement, associate professor Seth Garfield, is already well known at LLILAS from his tenure at the History Department as a respected Brazilianist. Seth received his Ph.D. from Yale University, where he was director of both the undergraduate major in Latin American Studies and the honors program in LAS. He subsequently taught at Bowdoin College from 1997-2000 before coming to UT in January 2001. A specialist in Brazilian history, Seth is also interested in broader questions of race and ethnicity in Latin America. He is author of Indigenous Struggle at the Heart of Brazil: State Policy, Frontier Expansion, and the Xavante Indians, 1937-1988 (2001). When asked his thoughts on his new job at the institute, Seth says, "LLILAS is internationally recognized for its academic excellence. Undergraduate majors have the privilege of choosing from a dazzling selection of courses and disciplines taught by leading scholars in the field. I am thrilled to assume the position of undergraduate faculty adviser and look forward to working closely with students and faculty affiliated with the program."

We welcome Seth and look forward to working with him in the days ahead.
