Fall 2006 Tinker Visiting Professor Announced

LLILAS is pleased to welcome its newest Tinker Visiting Professor, João José Reis, an internationally renowned scholar of Afro-Brazilian history at the Universidade Federal da Bahia. Dr. Reis's extensive research encompasses slave culture and rebellion, the African diasporic experience, religion and popular rituals, and urban history in Brazil.
Professor Reis holds two doctoral degrees from the University of Minnesota and postdoctoral degrees from the University of London and Stanford University, and has served as Visiting Professor at both Princeton University and the University of Michigan.
His book A morte e uma festa won the Jabuti Award and also received the prestigious Haring Award for best Latin American history book from the American Historical Association. He has published 5 books, 36 newspaper articles, and 28 book chapters as either author or coauthor.
Professor Reis arrived in August 2006 and is teaching HIS 386L, Research Seminar in Latin American History, Perspectives on Slavery in Brazil. He may be contacted via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
