What Does the Left do Right? Chilean President Explores Democracy in Latin America

Event: Ricardo Lagos, former president of Chile, will deliver the keynote address for "The Performance of Leftist Governments in Latin America: What Does the Left Do Right?" conference March 6-7 at The University of Texas at Austin.

When: The conference, organized by the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, begins at 8:30 a.m., Thursday, March 6, at the Texas Union, Santa Rita Room. Lagos will speak about "Democracy, Equity, and Growth: 18 Years of Democratic Coalition Government in Chile" at 4 p.m. A reception will follow. Panel discussions continue at 9 a.m., Friday, March 7.

Background: In 1999, Lagos, a member of the Socialist Party, secured the presidential nomination of ConcertaciĆ³n, a coalition of Socialists and Christian Democrats. In 2000, he became the first socialist to hold the presidency since Salvador Allende. When he left office in 2006, his approval ratings surpassed 70 percent.
