Graduate Program

Graduate work in our preeminent program in Latin American Studies provides outstanding interdisciplinary preparation for students planning a career grounded in the production of distinctive knowledge on a specific topic situated in Latin America, from a fundamentally interdisciplinary perspective. Undergraduate Program

The bachelor of arts degree in Latin American Studies (LAS) has been designed to provide a general, broad-based knowledge of Latin America. The interdisciplinary LAS major prepares students for a rapidly evolving job market that increasingly demands adaptable thinkers with a global knowledge base who are capable of cross-cultural collaboration.

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS)

The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship is a highly competitive U.S. Department of Education grant that provides graduate and undergraduate fellowships for students to pursue intensive training in modern languages and related area or international studies. These fellowships provide tuition and a substantial stipend for living expenses.

Funding Opportunities

Funding is available from LLILAS for both graduate and undergraduate study, including grants, fellowships, scholarships, and awards.

Internships at LLILAS

LLILAS has an unpaid internship program designed to provide undergraduate UT students with the opportunity to gain professional experience by learning about the work of multiple programs within LLILAS or to develop research skills by working with some of our most distinguished Latin Americanist faculty. Our institute is a vibrant and fast-paced environment where students will have the opportunity to interact with foreign students, visiting Latin American professors, government officials, politicians, and private sector representatives.

Institute of Latin American Studies Student Association (ILASSA)

The Institute of Latin American Studies Student Association (ILASSA) is the representative student body organization. It was formed by graduate students to encourage more active student participation in LLILAS and UT concerning Latin American Studies and to provide a voice regarding the direction of the LLILAS program. ILASSA assists with recruiting and orientation activities and also sends representatives to the Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) and other campus activities. Membership is open to all LLILAS graduate students.

UT Graduate Latin Americanist Network

The UT Graduate Latin Americanist Network currently includes over 200 graduate students who share information about a wide range of resources and opportunities.

Theses and Dissertations

LLILAS graduate students pursue scholarly research in a wide variety of Latin America-related topics. Many of their theses and dissertations are available online through the University of Texas Library.
