Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the complex cultural history of Mexican and Caribbean traditional and commercial music genres. Attention will be given to music of indigenous, African, European, and mixed origin. Mexico and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean will receive special attention, in part because of their size and their strong representation among immigrant populations in United States immigrants. Other musical traditions to be discussed include music of the Dominican Republic and music of the British Caribbean. A final section of the course will explore the music of Latin American musical influence in North America.
