Course Description

The Human Rights in Latin America course will survey the most significant human rights issues that have arisen in Latin America over the last several decades as well as the legal and advocacy mechanisms invoked to address those issues. In the process, the course will consider how human rights ideas, legal actions and activist strategies have the capacity, not always realized, to transform law and institutions, society, and the relationship between governments and citizens in Latin America Participation will count for 20% of the final grade. In addition, students will be required to write a paper about one case, situation, document or scholarly text discussed in class or comparing two or more such texts from different parts of the course.
