Course Description

Course Description In this course, we will read both five texts that have been considered important works of Spanish American narrative and a sampling of critical commentary on these texts. The criticism to be examined will include contemporary reactions to the texts (insofar as these are available) and examples of the diverse critical approaches that have been applied to them, including a few examples of earlier types of scholarly studies, such as those concerned with the author's biographical and intellectual influences, through various forms of textual analysis, feminism and gender studies, renewed research interest in race and ethnicity, and on to more recently emerged practices such as queer and ecocritical studies. Rather than strive to offer panoramic coverage of many texts, this course will focus on a restricted number of primary works so as to devote more attention to a diversity of critical approaches. While the selection of critical readings will include some essays from earlier eras, the majority of the readings will represent scholarly approaches that are still in use. Each student will be required to write a term paper of 17-20 pages. The approach must be metacritical, surveying and analyzing a particular problem or question in the scholarship on a given work or literary tendency. The term paper cannot be first and foremost a textual analysis; its primary focus must be an issue in literary research and commentary. Grading Policy term paper: proposal, 30% of final grade final version: 60% of final grade (17-22 pages double spaced and following either MLA or Chicago bibliographic style) reports in class, 10% Texts Provisional list of readings: Each primary text will be read together with a number of critical articles, which will be collected in a course packet.
