Course Description

In this course we have two objectives: 1) learning the basic structures of the Quechua language (the Cusco-Collao "dialect" spoken from South Central Peru to Northern Argentina), and 2) learning, from historical and anthropological perspectives, about the rich and diverse culture of the Andean highlands. The vocabulary and phrases in the exercises and dialogues in the language instruction manual involve daily life in towns and Indian Communities where Quechua is spoken among all social clases (Indian, Mestizo and Hispanic). We will complement our language learning and discussion of Andean culture by reading two ethnographies of contemporary Indian-Mestizo communities in the Department of Cuzco, Peru. You could apply the Quechua learned in this course in several ways, among them, travel, preparation for field work or institutional employment (Non-Government Organizations) in the Andean Republics (and in this country), and in the reading of historical documents, lexical and literary works, most notably, the ancient account of Andean religion known as the "Huarochiri Manuscript." The class will be conducted in English and the instructional materials (Course Packet and handouts) are also printed in English. Since in some cities Quechua frequently borrows words from Spanish, a knowledge of Spanish is useful, but not necessary (in this course). In addition, instructional materials are available for students who wish to apply their knowledge of Quechua gained in the course to the Quichua "dialect" of Ecuador. Course Requirements 25% Oral in-class participation in exercises and discussion on readings 30% 3 Written exercises on readings (Culture and Language in Bolin and in Gelles & Martínez) 30% 3 Written dialogues in Quechua using vocabulary and grammar in textbook/readings 10% End of course dialogue in Quechua (performed with script) 5% Homework checked for accuracy and completion for Reviews Units, 5, 10, 15. Texts 1) Course Packet manual includes chapters from: Introduction to Spoken Bolivian Quechua by Garland D. Bills, Bernardo Vallejo C., and Rudolph C. Troike (Institute of Latin American Studies, University of Texas Press, Austin, 1971).
