Course Description

In this course we will examine: how the news media cover social movements (focusing primarily upon US, Latin American, Middle Eastern, and transnational social movements); major elements influencing such news coverage; and their uses of alternative media to inform and persuade the public about their causes.

Number and Description of Writing Assignments: There will be three short (5-7 pages each) written assignments, each worth 20% of the final grade. Paper 1 will analyze the frames used by news reports of social protest in a country of the student's choice. Paper 2 will focus on how a social movement in a country of choice has attempted to attract and shape media coverage. Paper 3 will analyze how a social movement in a country of choice has utilized alternative media to inform and persuade the public about their cause. Area students (LAS, MES) will be required to write all papers about social movements within their region of study.

Grading Policy

Each paper will count for 20% of the final grade. Together, the papers will total 60% of the final course grade.
