This section of SPN 350 constitutes the seminar for the interdisciplinary Tracking Cultures program and enrollment is restricted to students already accepted into the program. This course seeks to complement and add balance to the program's academic offerings by introducing appropriate works of literature, art history, architecture, music, and cultural readings as well as providing students with the opportunity to begin synthesizing material from the other courses in the program. A primary focus of the course will be the history, literature, and cultures of Colonial Mexico and the relationship with Imperial Spain, including guest lectures from faculty in a variety of UT departments who specialize in Latin American Studies. This course will also prepare students for their trips to Mexico, Spain, and the Southwest, and will focus on the development of key writing skills pertinent to the selection of a topic and the writing of the fall report that the student will undertake in subsequent semesters. Topics to be studied include the fictional reconstruction of history, the representation of the "other," describing the "New World," and cultural convivencia in North Africa, Islamic Spain and Spanish America. This course is designed to satisfy the Substantial Writing Component requirement.
