Course Description

This course looks at recent debates in gender studies and feminist theory and practice in Latin America. In the first part of the course, we will critically read and discuss works that have shaped the debates in Latin American feminism. We will consider the evolution of both women's organizing and feminist theorizing from a historical perspective, situating Latin American Feminisms with respect to First Wave feminism and US Third World feminism. In the second part of the we will consider new forms of women's activism in Latin America, examining the differing ways that women are reshaping political participation in local, national, and global movements. The course assumes a working knowledge of gender and feminist theory and the ability to read Spanish.
