Course Description

This course surveys the political, economic, and social history of the approximately 400 million Spanish, French, and Portuguese-speaking persons who now live in the 20 countries of Latin America. We will concentrate on the historical trends of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as they have evolved in Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, Peru, Chile, and Argentina, although other countries will not be excluded in the readings and lectures. We intend to pay particular attention to those phenomena that explain the negotiation that has evolved between the mainly white elites and the racially-diverse popular classes in today's Latin American nations. Student requirements and preparations for the course include reading three paperback books, participating in class discussions, and attending lectures. In addition, each student will turn in a map assignment and a 3-5 page book essay based on the novel by Jorge Amado. One's final grade will consist of the following graded exercises: -A map assignment worth 5 % of the final grade or 50 points. -A mid-term exam worth 25 % of the final grade or 250 points. -A written book essay worth 30 % of the final grade or 300 points. -A final exam worth 40 % of the final grade or 400 points. The accumulation of points at the end of the semester will determine the student's final grade: i.e., 900 points or more for an A, 800 or more for a B, and so forth.
