Teaching Assistant and Graduate Research Assistant Positions
Language Component Teaching Assistantship
The Dean of Liberal Arts has given LLILAS several one-semester Spanish language component teaching assistant positions to be divided between fall and spring semesters. The intent of the language component concept is to introduce the use of the Spanish language in a classroom environment other than that of a Spanish language classroom. The graduate coordinator will put out a call for TAs in the spring.
Appointment as a TA grants eligibility for Resident Tuition entitlement (payment of tuition at rate established for Texas residents).
Duties: To prepare a parallel reading list in Spanish and conduct a weekly discussion in Spanish based on readings.
- must have near-native Spanish language skills
- must be a second-year graduate student in the Institute of Latin American Studies
- must be proficient in English*
*In 1989, the 71st Texas Legislature passed House bill 638 requiring that all public universities provide a program or short course to ensure that courses be taught clearly in the English language. In order to comply, the Center for Teaching Effectiveness and the Texas Intensive English Program are conducting an English Certification Program for international TAs and AIs. Graduate Research Assitantants
LLILAS has several one-year Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA) available. Generally, hiring is for positions beginning September 1. Interviews are conducted in the spring before the end of the semester. The graduate coordinator will put out a call for GRAs in the spring.
Appointment as a GRA grants eligibility for Resident Tuition Entitlement (payment of tuition at rate established for Texas residents).
Duties: To provide network information services
- graduate student in Latin American Studies
- strong computer skills including experience developing WWW pages, HTML, FTP, and a range of software programs
- working knowledge of Portuguese or Spanish
