Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Travel Scholarships

Award amount: $2,500 or $5,000

Award period: Student may apply awards to study abroad during the Fall, Spring or Summer semesters

Eligibility: Any LAS major. As stipulated in the Lozano Long endowment, at least one scholarship should be awarded to an eligible resident of one of the following counties: Atascosa, Bee, Bexar, Brooks, Cameron, Dimmit, Duval, El Paso, Frio, Goliad, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Jim Wells, Karnes, Kenedy, Kinney, Kleberg, Lasalle, Live Oak, Maverick, McMullen, Medina, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio, Starr, Uvalde, Valverde, Victoria, Webb, Willacy, Wilson, Zapata, and Zavala.

Award amount: $4,500

Eligibility: Any LAS major with a 3.0 or higher GPA. At least one scholarship should be awarded to an eligible resident of one of the Texas counties listed above.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies offers a limited number of Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) for study of Portuguese or an arranged Amerindian language at the intermediate or advanced level. These highly competitive fellowships are funded by the Department of Education and are available for both summer and academic year studies.

Awards will not be made to native speakers of the language or to those who possess fluency equivalent to educated native speakers in the language for which the award is sought.

Eligibility:

  • U.S. Citizen/permanent resident
  • Language study must be at the intermediate or advanced level
  • Shows potential for superior academic achievement as indicated by a long-term interest in Latin America
  • An undergraduate student in good standing at UT Austin

Academic Year FLAS

Undergraduate students from all fields of study who are in good standing at UT Austin are eligible to apply. During the fellowship period, academic-year FLAS recipients must be enrolled in at least three hours of language courses on a letter-grade basis during each long semester, as well as a Latin American area study course on a letter-grade basis during each long semester. In addition, students must be registered full-time (12 hours). Fellowships typically provide a stipend of $5,000 for the academic year (fall and spring), plus tuition and fees (up to $10,000).

Summer FLAS—For Portuguese language study at UT Austin or other approved Amerindian language study

Undergraduate students from all fields of study, who are in good standing at UT Austin, are eligible to apply. All program information must be included in the application materials. Fellowships typically provide a stipend of $2,500 (one summer session) plus UT Austin tuition and fees (for language course, up to $5,000). Summer courses are expected to have the same number of course hours as two-semester courses: a minimum of six weeks and at least 140 hours for intermediate and 120 hours for advanced level courses.
