Requirements
ILASSA invites students to submit for acceptance an abstract of a paper (300 words or less) within the field of Latin American Studies. The abstract will enable us to select papers for presentation and to organize panels for the conference. The final deadline for submission of abstracts is November 2, 2007. Final notices will be e-mailed by November 9, 2007, to accept or decline students' submissions for the conference. Students invited to participate will have until January 4, 2008, to submit final papers along with their registration fee. During the conference, each student will have approximately 15 minutes to present his or her work in a panel arranged around a common theme.
Abstract Submission
Abstracts should be submitted online in order to facilitate the submission process for everyone - especially for participants outside the United States. Hard copies of abstracts will not be accepted. Instructions, guidelines, and forms for submission of an abstract can be found online at the ILASSA website. If you have not received e-mail confirmation of abstract submission within a week, please contact the conference coordinators.
ILASSA Student Conference Abstract Guidelines
A diversity of disciplines are represented each year at the ILASSA Student Conference. In an effort to create a common basis from which to compare abstracts from different fields, we have posted below suggested guidelines for preparing your abstract as well as a list of the criteria on which your abstract submission will be judged.
Guidelines:
- Avoid discipline-specific jargon
- Make a clear statement of your project's central theme
- Define how your research/project fits within your field of study
- Define how your research/project engages contemporary issues/debates (within and/or outside of the academy)
- If you are submitting an abstract on a work-in-progress, explain your research to date as well as the findings you hope to present at the conference
All abstracts will be reviewed based on the following criteria:
- Clear articulation of project goals/central concept
- Relevance to contemporary issues (within or outside of the academy)
- Project represents advanced, original research
- Project advances knowledge of Latin American studies within the author's field of study
- Presentation will be understood by an educated, but interdisciplinary, audience
