Alumni Network

The students, faculty, and staff at the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) wish to reach out more to the LLILAS alumni. In hopes of doing this, an Alumni Outreach Team has been working hard to develop programs that unite the LLILAS community. Below are links to calendars and listservs, updates on jobs and internships, information about two new programs (job talk panels and mentoring), an online bulletin board controlled completely by alumni themselves, and much more. Please take a look and let us know what you think. The Alumni Website is currently under construction, and during this initial phase of the Alumni Outreach Program we would especially appreciate your suggestions and comments. Please contact one of the following Alumni Outreach Coordinators:

Alumni Newsletter

A new issue of Puentes, the alumni newsletter, is now online. Many thanks to Sarah Zell, Suzannah Gonzales, Sara Bush, and Julia McReynolds for putting together this latest edition. Starting with the spring 2006 semester, the LLILAS alumni page will include an alumni news area, so keep in touch and help us stay in touch with you. Calendar and Listservs

LLILAS Alumni on Yahoo!

This is a group for alumni to post announcements of various kinds: job postings, information about social gatherings, academic discussions and presentations, looking for other alumni, moving sales, etc. This is a good option for people who don't want to save every job posting or event announcement, as all of the messages are saved on the group page at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LLILAS_Alumni/

Subscriptions are available as email, daily digest, special notices, or no email (read messages on the webpage) A chat option is also available, should a group of alumni wish to arrange an online chat.

Getting on Chupacabra (ILASSA Listserv)

Contact with LLILAS Faculty

Faculty who receive LLILAS funding for conference or research travel are encouraged to contact LLILAS alumni in the area of their destination. The Alumni Outreach Coordinators will find out when and to where faculty will be traveling and attempt to get in touch with alumni in that area. If you would like to be informed when faculty members are in your area, please contact the Alumni Outreach Coordinators.

Job Talk Panels

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies Student Association (ILASSA) is interested in initiating contact with LLILAS alumni like you in order to learn about life after LLILAS. One way we are pursuing contacts is through requests for job talks. Six panel categories have been organized. They are: Careers in Education, Careers in Nonprofits, Government/Legal Affairs, Publishing/Communications Careers, Cultural Careers, and Technological Careers.

If you are interested in participating in one of the above panels or would like to organize your own job talk, please contact the ILASSA Student Representative for Alumni Outreach.

Mentoring Program

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies Student Association (ILASSA) is interested in initiating contact with LLILAS alumni like you in order to learn about life after LLILAS. One way we are pursuing contacts is through requests for mentors. The mentoring program is completely new. It has been started with the goal of helping students to benefit from the wisdom of people who have graduated from the LLILAS program.

Students who would like to participate in the mentoring program are paired with members of the alumni community who share their interests and have experience in their intended career field. After that, mentors and students determine the course of their own mentoring relationship. Mentors and students can communicate regularly via e-mail or phone calls, or can meet at the mentor's home or somewhere in town. Mentors might offer advice, share their experiences, or merely serve as a sounding board for students thinking about various career options.

Students interested in having a mentor should submit the Student Interest Questionnaire to the ILASSA Student Representative for Alumni Outreach. Alumni who would like to serve as mentors should submit the Mentor Interest Questionnaire to the Representative.

Visiting Scholars and Visiting Researchers

Interested in becoming a Visiting Researcher or Visiting Scholar? Due to the outstanding Benson Latin American Collection and its affiliation with the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS), many scholars choose to spend sabbatical or other research leave at the University of Texas at Austin.
