Recognizing Rights and Responsibilities in the 21st Century
June 10-13, 2008

Hemispheres Summer Teachers' Institute 2008 will explore the international context for the rights-related challenges we face today. We will look at specific cases that illustrate how people conceive of and struggle for crucial rights in civil, political, cultural, and economic realms. Restoring Women to World Studies (2007)
Hemispheres 2007 Summer Teachers' Institute discussed the contributions of notable women to historical and artistic movements, concepts of gender roles and gendered spaces, issues that are driving women's movements today, and the greater context in which all of these take place.

An Interdisciplinary Look at Mexican Culture, Film, and Theatre (2007)
Coordinated by UT's Performing Arts Center and co-sponsored by LLILAS, this workshop included faculty lectures and presentations of curriculum pieces designed by teachers who participated in a UT-led Fulbright program on Mexico's performing arts.

Mariachi across the Curriculum: A Workshop for Educators (2006)
The workshop focused on making cross-curricular connections. The study of mariachi in an academic context, in addition to empowering students who participate in it, adds to our understanding and appreciation of Mexican and Mexican-American history and culture.

21st Century Challenges in the Developing World (2006)
Hemispheres 2006 Summer Teachers' Institute explored the various influences--historical, geographical, political, economic, and cultural--that shape current affairs in the developing world.

Antiquity & Continuity (2005)
Hemispheres 2005 Summer Teachers' Institute explored the transition from ancient to contemporary world cultures by addressing how cultural beliefs and values adapt to, modify, and transcend shifting historical eras, political powers, and global systems.

Zoot Suit Workshop and Symposium (2004)
In conjunction with the Performing Arts Center at UT, LLILAS Outreach organized a workshop on teaching the history of the Zoot Suit riots and possible inclusion of the play/film, "Zoot Suit," in the classroom.

People and Place: Human-Geographic Relations (2004)
Hemispheres 2004 Summer Teachers' explored issues related to the long and complex relationship between humans and geography, how geographic influences have helped shape the trajectory of humankind since prehistory.

Explorers, Traders & Immigrants: Tracking Cultural Contact through Food (2003)
Hemispheres 2003 Summer Teachers' Institute discussed cultural contact and traced the historical journey of foodstuffs, spices, and edible commodities from their origins in far-flung corners of the globe to their everyday inclusion as staples of our diets.
