NREGA, Panchayat Raj, Widow and Old Age Pension…..Frog’s eye view from Shreeji ka Kheda

Sat, October 23, 2010 • 5:00 PM • ENS 115, UT Austin campus

What is the ground reality of rural India? What is it like to live in a village? How does one go about solving the problems of disease, illiteracy, and unemployment? Equipped with a headful of questions, Nikhil Gulati and Pragya Bhagat decided to shift their residence from Austin, Texas to Shreeji ka Kheda, a small hamlet in the outskirts of Bhilwara, Rajasthan. In this village of seventy homes they received an education unlike any other.

Through interactions with the residents of the Kheda as well as the local administration, they found that change happens slowly. Becoming part of the Kheda's sociocultural web they received insight on the functioning of numerous schemes and programs such as National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGA), Widow and Old Age Pension, and the Panchayati Raj Institution.
