SAI Co-sponsored Event: Jhalak 2011
Sat, November 12, 2011 • 6:30 PM • 4100 Westbank Drive, Austin TX
Celebrating the musical legends of India
Hosted by the Indian Cultural Association at The University of Texas, Jhalak will be held on November 12th at Westlake Auditorium. With over $1,850 in prize money, Jhalak is the LARGEST South Asian talent show in the State of Texas. The show seeks to aggregate the best and brightest teams from all over the state of Texas under one roof.
Jhalak is a cultural extravaganza featuring educational videos, mouth-watering Indian food, and exhilarating dance performances. The fun doesn’t stop when Jhalak ends. The Indian Cultural Association hosts the only South Asian party in the Heart of Austin’s Sixth Street.
Celebrating its 9th year, Jhalak began with humble roots. Initially held in the Atrium of the McCombs School of Business, Jhalak first moved outdoors to the South Mall of UT Austin. The event was known to draw crowds of 3,000 people and quickly became a favorite to UT students. The need for a more intimate, indoor venue became evident and Jhalak moved yet again to Hogg Auditorium. Most notably, last year’s show sold out 15 minutes after the show began and over 1500 people were in attendance
Jhalak 2011- “A Tribute to our Musical Legends!”‘ focuses on educating and entertaining students about the rich cultural heritage that India has to offer. Every performance is preceded by a video to inform the audience of a particular musical legend in India’s culture. This year, videos will inform members of the audience on the careers of A.R. Rahman, Lata Mangeshkar, and more!
