Seminar on Buddhist manuscriptology I by Jens Braarvig
Wed, November 7, 2012 • 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM • BUR 436A (Religious Studies conference room)
Jens Braarvig’s field of research is Indian Buddhism. He is the director of the project “Buddhist Manuscripts in the Schøyen Collection” which edits, translates, and studies recently discovered Buddhist manuscripts from Bamiyan/Afghanistan that have shed an entirely new light on the history of Indian Buddhism. In the two seminars Dr. Braarvig will show us some manuscripts, talk about the challenges in studying them (and in dealing with an eccentric manuscript collector, Martin Schøyen, who owns the largest private manuscript collection in the world). The targeted audience includes interested faculty and graduate students.
