South Asia Seminar

Thu, November 15, 2007 • 3:30 PM • Meyerson Conference Room, WCH 4.118

This paper, excerpted from my book, From Chennai to Madras and Back: Spaces of Cultural Memory in a Neoliberal City (in press, Indiana University Press), deasl with a neo-traditional village housing project situated in Chennai's rapidly expanding suburban fringe. I discuss the ways that the project links vernacular architecture with embodied historical consciousness and, in particular, its appeal to Gandhian norms and praxis. The case serves as a text for examining how urban-rural relations are being impacted and reconfigured by liberalization and how diverse techniques of cultural memory may serve as resources for subaltern political voice in such contexts.
