South Asia Seminar Series

Thu, January 31, 2008 • 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM • Meyerson Conference Room, WCH 4.118

What led Indian nationalists to trade earlier claims of equality for Indians as British subjects ˆ their rights as imperial citizens ˆ for citizenship rights in an arguably more limited, and even limiting polity: the nation-state? The paper explores the alternative forms of political subjectivity and political community, beyond the nation-state, which animated anti-colonial nationalism before the era of the principle of national self-determination and of international system of nation-states. It proceeds, as such, on the assumption that there was nothing natural or automatic about anti-colonialism taking the form of the demand for an independent nation-state.
