My research interests are in studying gender and sexuality politics in India. More specifically, I am interested in the city of Chennai and the state of Tamil Nadu, where I have lived and worked all my life. For my PhD research I am looking at LGBT rights activism in Chennai, with a specific focus on how articulations of self, self-respect, and pride happen in conversations among community groups in the city, and what inflections these articulations have received from the residual effects of the ideologies of the Self-Respect movement of early 20th century Tamil region, a social and political movement that engaged at once with caste, nationalism, gender, sexuality, etc.
I have also been a dance and theatre performer for a number of years now, and I take great delight in theorizing performance, politics, gender, sexuality, etc.
My other keen interest is in translation. I translate between Tamil and English. My most recent publication is a translation of a brilliant Tamil novel, 'Madhorubagan,' written by Perumal Murugan, one of the leading Tamil literary figures today. My translation of this novel, titled 'One Part Woman' was publihsed by Penguin India in December 2013. It has, since then, seen two editions. For this work, I received the VT Ratnam Translation Award from the Tamil Literary Garden, Canada.
