Hindi Urdu Flagship hosts workshop on language Instruction

A workshop for instructors of Hindi and Urdu will be held in Austin, Texas from 2-3 November 2007. This event is being hosted by the University of Texas at Austin's Hindi/Urdu Flagship Program with sponsorship from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. All sessions are free of charge and open to anyone interested. The agenda for the workshop includes two keynote speakers: Professors Surendra and Vijay Gambhir from the Hindi Program at the University of Pennsylvania, husband and wife, both with over 30 years of experience in teaching Hindi and Urdu. Professor Surendra Gambhir will give a presentation titled "An Overview of Hindi and Urdu Teaching in the United States: Where have we been and where are we headed?" at 0930 on Friday, November 2nd; followed by Professor Vijay Gambhir with " The Rich Tapestry of Heritage Learners of Hindi-Urdu" at 1030. These presentations will be on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin in Homer Rainey Hall ( HRH), Hindi Urdu Resource Center, 3rd Floor, Room 3.102.
A special "white box" lunch session especially for students with Hindi and Urdu skills will feature a talk in Urdu and English by Dr. Syed A. Karim (CV in pdf format), a high-level civilian official working for the United States Air Force. His talk is titled "Using Hindi and Urdu Language Skills in Government Service". A parallel white box lunch session (especially for instructors) will feature a talk by Gautami Shah of Rice University. Her talk is titled "Strategies to Raise Hindi Proficiency Levels in Undergraduate Programs".
The workshop will also feature multiple presentations by instructors of Hindi and Urdu from the two premier U.S. government language training institutions: the Foreign Service Institute, School of Language Studies and the Defense Department's Defense Language Institute – Foreign Language Center. These institutions will present their best practices for teaching Hindi and Urdu, including samples of their curriculums and methods of evaluating proficiency. Most workshop sessions on Friday will be in the Will C. Hogg Building; on Saturday, the sessions will be in the Elm Meeting Room of the Radisson – Austin North Hotel at 6000 Middle Fiskville Road.
