Liberal Arts Career Services (LACS) Library

The Library is available between 8 AM - 5 PM, Monday - Friday and does not require an appointment to visit. While you cannot check out books or publications, you may use our copy machine to copy pages of interest. The library is open to Liberal Arts students, as well as alumni, to research, explore, and study in a quiet environment.

Our online resources are available 24/7 and while most are open to the public, a few are password protected and are only open to current liberal arts students. To view the usernames and passwords for these sites, access your LiberalArts@Work account under "Resource Library" > "Job Search Site Passwords" > "Passwords"

Books

Our library is home to hundreds of books and covers such categories as industries, careers by majors/interests, pre-law, internship, interviewing, international guides, resumes and cover letters and many more!

Book of Lists

Is there a particular city you want to live and work in? Want to see a list of the largest banks in a metropolitan area? Or how about a city's top advertising agencies? Then check out our Book of Lists, one of our most popular resources!

Book of Lists are annual publications which provide you with listings of hundreds of the hottest area companies/organizeations, usually by industry or ranking. We carry Books of Lists for most major metropolitan areas in the United States.

In-House Publications

Interested in where your liberal arts degree can take you? Want to know where other students have gone? Then check out our various in-house publications, written by LACS Career Coaches.

Our in-house publications are designed to help introduce you to the wide variety of available career opportunities. Our publications include Majors to Careers, fact sheets offering job sites, resources and sample employers for each major in the College of Liberal Arts, Making Internships Work, real-life stories and profiles of UT-Austin liberal arts graduates and their internship experiences and So You Want to Work In...?, a series of factsheets introducing you to a variety of professions open to you as a liberal arts student, as well as providing advice on how to get into these industries.

Subscriptions

We subscribe to several national, as well as local/regional publications which keep you up-to-date on the most recent developments in today's rapidly changing world. You can stop by to browse The Economist, The Austin Business Journal, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The NonProfit times, BuisnessWeek and several more!

International Resources

Do you plan to travel abroad for an internship, teach English overseas, to work or to take a Gab Year? Our Library offers a variety of books, publications and job search engines to help prepare you for your global adventure. We carry the Lonely Planet Gap Year, International Job Finder, The International Educator and many other resource books for jobs and internships abroad and in the travel industry.

IT Resources

The Library has 4 computer workstations and a laser printer, which you can use free of charge to print all your career related materials, such as your resume, cover letter, specific job descriptions, etc.

A copy machine is also available free of charge for any career-related research and interests.

Online Resources

Take advantage of the many online resources available to you! Examples include LiberalArts@Work, your connection to employers, jobs and internships designed exclusively for College of Liberal Arts students, Vault, a vast, online career library with resources over several industries and professions, OptimalResume, a program providing resume formatting and help and a host of online websites dedicated to your job search. We also offer several subscriber-based job search sites, each with their own username and password, which you can find at our computer workstations or online at your LiberalArts@Work account under "Resource Library" > "Job Search Site Passwords" > "Passwords."

Making the Most of the Library

With so much to read and learn, how do you best use the Resource Library? We recommend starting early. Don't wait until the last minute! Some helpful suggestions include:

  • Browse our print resources that cover industries of interest to you. If you don't know where to start, start wtih your major by exploring Majors to Careers or by browsing one of our books under our "Careers by Interest" section.
  • Stop by between classes to look at our job search sites or our latest publications.
  • Do what you can from home by building your resume on OptimalResume and by searching for jobs and internships on our online job search sites and in LiberalArts@Work.
  • Ask questions! Our help desk person, as well as our Library Resource Manager is filled with knowledge and happy to help you in any way they can.
  • Use our resources to come up with two questions to ask your Career Coach at your next meeting. To schedule an appointment with a Career Coach, please call our office at (512) 471-7900. Remember, you must create an account in LiberalArts@Work before you can meet with a Career Coach.
