Professional Development Courses
Liberal Arts Career Services offers the following courses to help define your career goals, articulate your strengths, learn business concepts, gain hands-on experience and develop your professional skills.
LA 101L: Major in the Workplace (1 Credit)
Learn a 21st century approach to identifying careers that capitalize on who you are, the life experiences you’ve had, and the skills you’ve developed through your liberal arts education.
Over seven weeks this one-credit course, designed for juniors and seniors, will help you:
- Make the connection between academics, life experiences and potential careers.
- Articulate what an area studies major has to offer the workplace.
- Develop stories to use in interview and professional networking situations.
- Produce a compelling résumé and cover letter, or graduate school essay.
- Move more confidently into the future.
LA 325: Nonprofit Consulting: An Internship Alternative (3 Credits)
Learn about and practice essential professional development skills, positively impact the community, and earn course credit within this highly-interactive, project-based course.
Are you looking for an opportunity to:
- Use your liberal arts skills, such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and perspective-taking, to solve a real-world issue?
- Learn effective consulting, creativity & innovation, team-working, communication, business etiquette, and other professional development skills?
- Discover your strengths, and how you might use them to make a difference?
- Gain experience that may impress a prospective employer?
Join us for this 15-week course in which you will have the opportunity to positively impact one of four nonprofit projects of your choice. Classes will combine lectures, in-class activities, discussions, and opportunities to work on your selected project.
Liberal Arts Internship Courses
Make the most out of your internship by enrolling in a credit-based internship. The internship courses will help you:
- Integrate the knowledge derived from your academic studies with the experiences gained from a real-world work setting.
- Further develop your professional skills through course discussions, assignments and journal topics.
- Consider how you are growing personally by facilitating reflection about school and work.
Liberal Arts Career Services offers the following internship courses:
- LA 310 (3 credits): a seminar-based course which meets once a week, offered during the fall and spring semesters only. This course is for students who are interning locally in the Austin area.
- LA 310wb (3 credits): a web-based course with no meeting times, offered every semester: fall, spring & summer.
- LA 110wb (1 credit): a web-based course with no meeting times, offered during the fall and spring semesters only.
- LA 310wb - Córdoba (3 credits): a web-based course offered in conjunction with the UT Córdoba International Internship Program.
