Networking is the exchange of information and an opportunity to speak with professionals to learn about their career fields. The majority of job openings are not advertised, and networking contacts can help you get your foot in the door. Referrals are how the majority of applicants discover job openings. Networking is an important resource for new college graduates seeking employment.

Why does networking work?

  • People are more comfortable hiring someone they know.
  • Most people are helpful by nature.
  • Most people have been there before with seeking employment.
  • Many of us will be there again in the future when we seek career advancement and new employment.

Who is in my network?

  • Start with family, friends, and neighbors.
  • Don’t forget co-workers, supervisors, and teachers.
  • Attend a career fair and speak with a recruiter.
  • Join student & professional organizations.
  • Participate in internships and externships or other volunteer activities.

How do I get started?
