Graduate Student Profiles Now AvailableThe College of Liberal Arts offers a special feature for graduate students, a series of editable profile pages with custom tabs and content that can be used to promote research and teaching. These pages integrate seamlessly with the college's departmental and center websites.
“Building the site was very easy,” says Jan Uelzmann, a graduate student in Germanic Studies who used his graduate student profile page to promote his work prior to graduation. “Within 20 minutes I had my profile set up. I think that with these profiles, UT puts a powerful tool in the hands of their graduate students to present their professional and research interests to the world.”
Sarah Wagner, a graduate student in Linguistics, also built a custom profile. Wagner says, “I've found the new department websites to be very nice and easy to use. Some of the basic, UT-required info was put on initially by our department staff, but then I added other tabs. The standardized, official look of the pages makes it easy to have a site where my dissertation participants can get more information on me if they wish. I'm also happy that I can personalize and maintain my page myself; that way, I can keep my CV up to date and add new information as I need to.”
In addition to promoting their own research and instruction, Wagner points to how graduate students can use their web profiles to promote undergraduate research. “I created a tab for an undergraduate student research opportunity that I had available. Within a month of putting up the information, I was contacted by a very interested student who is now helping me with my research.”
Finally, web presences are increasingly important in seeking placements after graduation. Says Uelzmann, “This site was very useful for me during my time on the job market. It was an important opportunity to present myself to potential employers. Ultimately, this site was an integral part of my successful job search, as I will be starting as an assistant professor in German at the Georgia Institute of Technology this Fall.”
Graduate students can access their own pages through the college database application. Home departments, centers, and institutes that have not yet activated this feature are encouraged to contact the LAITS Web Support team to make this resource available to all their graduate students.
