Colloquium, Barbara Bullock (French & Italian, UT) - "Phonetic Variation in Bilingual Speech"

Mon, October 12, 2009 | UTC 3.122

3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Do bilinguals move immediately from the phonetics of one language into the phonetics of the other when they switch between languages? This is a question that psychologists have attempted to answer in order to assess whether or not bilinguals are able to completely suppress one of their languages while speaking the other. In this talk, I argue that there are many factors beyond bilingual control that bear on this issue and demonstrate that bilinguals pursue multiple strategies when attempting to harmonize their phonetic systems.
