UT Linguist Hilaria Cruz Is In the News

Linguistics doctoral student Hilaria Cruz has recently been featured in the Christian Science Monitor for her popular Chatino Language Documentation Facebook page, where she and many young Chatino speakers from Oaxaca, Mexico communicate using a Chatino writing system that Hilaria helped to design. Hilaria is now finishing a doctoral dissertation on political oratory and ritual language in San Juan Quiahije, Oaxaca, Mexico, the community where she was raised. Based on a large collection of recordings she has made, she shows how Chatino speakers to this day use parallelism, ritual couplets, and other poetic devices to create oratory similar in many ways to that of classical Maya and Nahuatl.
