Lecture: "The Catholic Charismatic Renewal and the 'Continental Mission' in Guatemala"

Wed, October 26, 2011 | BUR 436A

12:00 PM

In May 2007, the Latin American Bishops (CELAM) launched a "continental mission' in their fifth general conference in Aparecida, Brazil. The revivalist language of the resulting Aparecida Document (DA) and the mission strategy presented herein have a marked charismatic influence. Based on fieldwork in Guatemala, this paper examins how the DA is being received and interpreted by the Catholic Church in Guatemala and within the charismatic movement in the country.

Dr. Jakob Egeris Thorsen, Aarhus University, Denmark, will argue that the implementation of the "continental mission" will very likely result in an increased pentecostalization of Guatemalan Catholicism.

Light refreshments will be provided, but please feel free to bring lunch for this brown bag event.
