Galen Brokaw holds a PhD from Indiana University and specializes in colonial Latin America with emphasis on historiography, indigenous writing, and Nahuatl language and culture. His most recent book, A History of Khipu (Cambridge University Press, 2010), has revolutionized our understanding of the khipu as a semiotic system that stands in for writing, despite traditional allegations that Andean peoples had no writing but were only oral cultures.
