Lecture: "Cuban Compromises: Race and Revolution as Lived Experiences"

Devyn Spence Benson, Williams College, Afro-Cuban experiences with the Fidel Castro government during the Cuban Revolution in the early 1960s. She examines the meaning Cubans gave to their participation in revolutionary projects, such as the 1961 literacy campaign. Dr. Benson will also highlight the artistic production of Black women artists to show the range of Afro-Cuban experiences with the revolution in order to complicate simplistic notions of unambiguous black support for the state during the first two decades after 1959.
