José Miguel Wisnik is a renowned Brazilian musician, essayist, and professor at the Universidade de São Paulo. He is the author of several innovative and award-winning books on Brazilian popular music, literature, soccer, and the cultural politics of race. Recipient of such prestigious awards as the Prêmio Jabuti (1978 and 2009), Troféu Noel Rosa (1989), Ordem do Mérito Cultural (2009), and a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation scholarship (1983-84), Professor Wisnik has also served as a visiting professor at UC Berkeley (2006) and a Tinker scholar at the University of Chicago (2012). Professor Wisnik has also led a highly successful career as a musician and composer. In addition to having performed on numerous recordings, he has also written scores for film, dance and theater, including collaborations with such notable musicians as Tom Zé and Caetano Veloso.
