Poetry Reading: "Salgado Maranhão"

Tue, November 20, 2012 | Joynes Reading Room, CRD 007

7:00 PM

Salgado Maranhão, one of the Brazil's leading poets, is accompanied by his American translator Alexis Levitin.

Salgado Maranhão's white father was descended from a wealthy family whose plantations in the past had been worked by slaves.  His mother was a black field laborer who sang to him from a folk tradition tracing back to the lyric poetry of the troubadours.  As he says, "The Mansion" and "The Shanty" flow together in his veins.  His collected poems, The Color of the Word, won Brazil's highest poetry award in 2011.  In addition to his nine books of poetry, he has written song lyrics and made recordings with some of Brazil's leading jazz and pop musicians.

Free and open to the public.
