LLILAS Welcomes Two New Faculty

LLILAS is pleased to announce the arrival of two new faculty members, Marcelo Paixão and Paola Canova. Paixão will be dual faculty with African and African Diaspora Studies while Canova will split her duties between LLILAS and the Department of Anthropology.


The Primeros Libros project is a digital collection of books printed before 1601 in the Americas.

NEH Grant Will Transform Study of Early Books

The University of Texas at Austin is one of six recipients of a Digital Humanities Implementation Grant award from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The grant of $215,000 will fund “Reading the First Books: Multilingual, Early-Modern OCR for Primeros Libros.”

NASA-Funded Project Under Way in Puerto Rico

Assistant Professor Carlos Ramos-Scharrón (LLILAS, Department of Geography and the Environment) has collaborated this July with students from the Geography and Environmental Sciences Departments, Universidad de Puerto Rico, Río Piedras, to conduct research in the Puerto Rican highlands.
