Wed, April 28, 2010

Diplomat and businessman Ambassador Hector E. Morales, Jr., will speak on the current economic and investment climate in Latin America on May 6, 2010, in Houston as part of the new LLILAS speaker series “Faces of the Americas/Rostros de las Américas.”

In his talk “Current Economic and Political Developments in Latin America and the Investment Environment,” Ambassador Morales will examine how U.S. investors can successfully engage with the region, what to expect politically and economically in Latin America in the near future, and the effect of these developments on the United States and our relationship with the hemisphere. A panel including experts from UT, the Houston Chronicle, and the securities firm RBC Wealth Management will contribute their perspectives on opportunities for investment in the region. A Q&A session with the audience will follow.
Ambassador Morales served under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama as Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS), and he was the lead negotiator for both presidents in preparations for the Fifth Summit of the Americas in 2009. Ambassador Morales also has served as U.S. Executive Director to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and as a member of the board of directors of the Inter-American Foundation. He is currently Vice Chairman of the New York–based investment firm Global Strategic Associates and Of Counsel at Baker & McKenzie in Washington, D.C.
Faces of the Americas/Rostros de las Américas is a new speaker series that LLILAS has created to bring dynamic voices from Latin America and the U.S. to Texas to discuss business and current events in the region. Experts in finance, politics, education, and the media share their perspectives on Latin America and its relationship with the United States, with a special focus on conditions affecting business opportunities between the U.S. and Latin America. Talks take place four times a year and feature a reception with coffees from Latin America.
