John Carter Brown Library to Join Primeros Libros Project

Thu, November 3, 2011

The John Carter Brown Library at Brown University is joining the Primeros Libros project as a major new academic partner. This ambitious endeavor seeks to build and preserve a digital collection of the first books printed in Mexico before 1601 as a significant tool for scholarly research.

Primeros Libros was initiated in 2010 by a consortium of institutions led by the Benson Latin American Collection at the University of Texas at Austin, the Biblioteca Histórica José María Lafragua at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, and the Cushing Memorial Library and Archives  at Texas A&M University. Approximately 220 unique titles are held in institutions around the world, with most held in Mexico and the United States. To date, 91 of these books have been digitized and most are currently available on the project's website: http://primeroslibros.org/

The renowned  John Carter Brown Library brings more than seventy additional titles to the primeros libros collection, the largest contribution of any member institution.
